The Unusual Penguin, is a sweet smart narrative for every child and adult who has felt different or strange or who just simply is not like the other people around them.

Inspired by the authors’ own journey as an “Unusual Penguin” and by the journey she watched her son embark on as early as three years old, this story captures the pain of being misjudged, the sorrow that can arise out of being atypical and the transcendent joy that can be found when you discover who you truly are and learn to value yourself accordingly.

5.0 out of 5 stars – Amazing story

“Such an amazing story of an adorable little one who feels different. The author writes so children will relate and understand that everyone has something different. A very tender, loving story that is well written and the illustrations add to the fun. Should be in elementary school for all teachers to share in class!!” – Jackie P

5.0 out of 5 star – Fun poems, cute artwork, and a wonderful story of finding yourself

“The poems reminded me of Dr Seuss, and even more clever when the meter changed because this little guy didn’t fit in at penguin school. It’s a pleasure to find such good reading material and original artwork in a world flooded with licensed characters. The artwork is super cute.” – Bernadette

5.0 out of 5 stars – Explains Autism to Children and Adults

“I highly recommend this beautiful children’s book that explains autism to children and adults. We have all sadly watched unusual penguins struggle to fit in not realizing they are actually eagles. I have personally known many soaring “eagle” scientists, respected in the skies who have found a way to be accepted in Penguin Land. The story clarifies that being on the spectrum isn’t always easy but it is a gift. Unusual penguins can soar above and find their way, being an eagle in a penguin world. And there are penguins down below that will always be there for them with love and support. Reviewed by the proud parent of an Eagle.” – Ian L

    Just Wonderful
I love that this book didn’t end up with the same ending that outsider narratives tend to have (like Forrest Gump, Rudolph) in which the character ultimately assimilates because they are suddenly palatable or serve a purpose to the dominant players in a community. Such stories let everybody with any type of bigotry off of the hook. This book does not—its descriptive without judgment and realistic insofar as it lets the readers make meaning of the hero’s journey. I also love the accompanying illustrations, which are warm and cute, yet speak to the inner workings of the conflict. We all need more understanding about neurodiverse people so they can thrive and prosper–and this book is an outstanding example of it.

    Such a sweet read!
I really enjoyed this personalized story relating to a misunderstood penguin/child. It helps us to appreciate and embrace these differences. And on a side note, the author Madeleine caught me in the store in a situation with a child having a melt down and gave us a copy out of kindness ❤️

The great twist – he’s not a penguin.
Loved the book! Cleverly written, the twist – he wasn’t a penguin – soared to the highest heights. We may appear like someone, we’re our own selves.

    Best book of the year!
What a lovely find! Well written and an easy read, this book is sure to captivate the attention of children and adults. The author and artist have both done an AMAZING job and this book should be the next addition to your bookshelf!

    How far things have come!
I am the proud mother of a 27 year old son on the spectrum and how I wished there was a book like this over 20 years ago that would help HIM to understand he was exactly the person he was meant to be – the adorable artwork and cleaver story telling is perfect for all children and parents too!!

    Very heartwarming book
My husband has ASD and related to this book in so many ways. Loved the art, it fit perfectly with the topic. The story will help so many children with ASD, it sure helped my husband.

Beautiful children’s book with an important lesson!
This book is so precious!! It really emphasizes the importance of empathy….something this world is lacking these days! And watch out, it’s a tear jerker! 😭

Also coming from a mom who has read a ton of children’s books, it is an EXCELLENT read!! Flows effortlessly…the rhymes and words, and the illustrations are colorful and beautiful! So well done! 👏🏻
